About the Course

The second course in the Certificate in Agile program, Applications of Agile Principles builds upon the foundation of the topics and concepts learned in the first course. This course will provide you with a deeper understanding of how to successfully implement Agile in your organization by focusing on the roles, responsibilities and interactions of the entire Scrum team to effectively transform your company or business into a highly efficient Agile environment. The course also covers how other process improvement methodologies align with Agile.

Week 1
Agile Leadership and Communication Skills
  • Identify the characteristics of a successful Agile leader
  • Describe how to establish effective teams
  • Develop teams to be empowered by creating a foundation of trust and mutual respect
  • Optimize team dynamics by addressing dysfunctions of the team
Week 2
Advanced Product Owner Concepts
  • Describe the role and responsibilities of the Product Owner
  • Define the purpose and parameters of the vision statement
  • Create a product roadmap
  • Effectively use estimates at the stories and task level
  • Relate how the Product Owner manages the product backlog
  • Utilize methods to prioritize business value and effort
  • Determine the velocity and sustainable pace of a team
  • Analyze release plans and the role of the Product Owner in release management
Week 3
Agile Team Development and Performance
  • Define the role of team performance in Agile environments
  • Discern how team ground rules support team commitment to desired outcomes
  • Describe the impact of interpersonal and technical skills on Agile teams
  • Create high-performing cross-functional teams through empowerment and motivation
  • Integrate team goals with the project vision
  • Align project objectives and team goals
Week 4
Lean and Kanban for Agile
  • Discuss the history of Agile
  • Determine the definition of work in progress and the connection with Kanban
  • Analyze the benefits that continuous integration brings to an organization
  • Distinguish the connection of continuous integration with continuous delivery
  • Discuss the historical significance of Kanban and Kaizen
  • Utilize different methods such as value stream mapping and fishbone diagrams to enhance projects
Week 5
Adaptive Planning for Agile Projects
  • Apply adaptive planning techniques in successful Agile execution
  • Describe managing stakeholder expectations to increase the probability of success
  • Construct roadmaps to optimize resource consumption
  • Review and refine the initial estimates
  • Discuss using releases and iterations to optimize estimating resource consumption while integrating work execution
  • Create and refine the initial scope, schedule and cost range estimates
Week 6
Project Management and Agile
  • Describe the role and responsibilities of the project manager
  • Compare PMI methodology and Agile
  • Describe how Agile fits within project management
  • Discuss using Agile for volatile and iterative projects
Week 7
Project Management and Agile, continued
  • Discuss methods and measures for quantifying and realizing value
  • Explore using the MVP method on projects
  • Discuss applying the MMF to an iteration and a backlog
  • Define continuous delivery (CD), continuous management (CM) and continuous integration (CI)
  • Discuss applying the Kano Model and Kotter’s Change Model to prioritization and the Scrum framework
Week 8
The Scrum Team
  • Explain the importance of the Scrum team
  • Discuss the qualities for creating a successful self-organizing team in an Agile environment
  • Define the concept and theory of Situational Leadership
  • Describe how to create an Agile Team culture
  • Define an approach to build Scrum teams for large work efforts
