Military Tuition Assistance

Military Tuition Assistance

One of the ways to leverage the skills and knowledge gained during military service is by taking advantage of military tuition assistance (TA) to pay for continuing education. Military TA pays up to 100% of tuition expenses for eligible Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine and Coast Guard servicemembers. While each branch has unique requirements for coverage, all military TA is viewed as money the servicemember has earned - it is not a loan to be repaid.

Military TA Chart for Active Duty Personnel, Reserves, and Spouses
  • Tuition plus fees (Lab, Enrollment, Computer and Special Fees only)
AF Active Duty Maximum
  • $250 per semester credit hour
  • $166 per quarter credit hour
  • $4500 total per fiscal year
AF Reserves Maximum
  • $250 per semester credit hour
  • $166 per quarter credit hour
  • $4500 total per fiscal year
AF Spouse Maximum
  • 50% of unmet tuition (tuition less other aid) charge per course
  • $1500 total per academic year

As the chart indicates, active duty Air Force and Air Force reserves personnel are eligible for the same levels of tuition assistance to further their professional and personal educational goals. Military TA is also available to spouses through the Spouse Tuition Assistance Program (STAP). STAP is designed to help spouses of active duty Air Force personnel advance their education and increase their occupational opportunities when accompanying a servicemember overseas. Funding is limited to courses taken only through contracted distance-learning providers or contracted on-base programs.

Would You Enjoy Helping Fellow Service Members Reach Their Career Goals?

A career in the human resources (HR) field is one way to help active duty personnel make the right moves to advance in their military careers, as well as providing guidance to fellow veterans transitioning into civilian life. Even if it's been years since you earned your degree, you may find pursuing a master's track or advanced professional training easier than you would think. Assistance is available to guide students through the enrollment processes to help get them on the right track.

There are often many opportunities for individuals who have obtained a HR degree, and career advancement is possible with the right education, training, and industry certifications, such as the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP℠) or SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP℠) designation from the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM).

You can have the satisfaction of becoming the trusted human resources advisor fellow veterans and servicemembers turn to when they need career guidance. With military TA to pay for tuition and fees, the skills and knowledge needed to launch a HR career are within reach.
