RN to BSN Admissions Requirements

To be considered for acceptance into Villanova's RN to BSN online degree program, you must have:

  • Graduated from an ACEN or NLN CNEA accredited diploma or associate degree in nursing program with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above and a GPA of 2.75 or above in all nursing courses.

Applicants must submit the following:

  • A completed application and application fee
  • Personal statement describing the applicant's relevant experience and ultimate career goals
  • Two letters of recommendation (preferably by professionals in the Nursing field, such as a Nursing Educator or Clinical Nurse Supervisor) that speak to clinical strengths and aptitude for advanced study
  • For U.S. applicants, current licensure to practice as a registered nurse in a U.S. state or territory at the time of application
  • Official transcripts from the nursing program completed and for all colleges/universities attended
  • If currently enrolled in the last semester of an ACEN or NLN CNEA accredited diploma or associate degree nursing program, submit completed transcripts to date and courses in progress
  • Licensure will be required prior to enrollment in any course
  • A satisfactory criminal background check through, including drug screening and finger printing. If the student's state requires a Child Abuse clearance this will also need to be completed. For students completing clinical courses in Pennsylvania, a PA Child Abuse clearance is also required. These documents are required prior to completion of the second session.**
  • A completed resume, Clinical History and Physical form*
  • Evidence of malpractice insurance*
  • CPR Certification.*

* Must be submitted two months prior to starting clinical courses and be current through completion of clinical courses, or you cannot enroll in NUR 4113 or NUR 4117.

** The background check is required for review prior to completion of the second session.

Proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is not required. Applicants who graduated from a non-U.S. institution of higher education may be required to provide additional documentation and/or international background checks through approved providers.

RN to BSN Admission Types

Applicants for the RN to BSN program are admitted under regular (matriculated) admission only.

  • Matriculated: The applicant has provided all documents and completed all requirements, and the applicant has a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 and a degree or associate's degree from an accredited nursing program or currently enrolled in the last semester of an ACEN (formerly NLNAC) accredited diploma or associate's degree nursing program. The student has current licensure to practice in a state in the U.S., its territories or equivalent. These students are eligible for financial aid. Applicants for the BSN program may be admitted if they meet all of the requirements for admission yet have not completed the background check for up to two enrollment sessions. Approval of background checks will be a requirement before students begin their advanced nursing courses. A student will be considered fully matriculated once all conditions for acceptance have been met.
  • Pending Applicants: Applicants currently enrolled in the last semester of an ACEN (formerly NLNAC) accredited diploma or associate's degree nursing program may submit an application and transcripts of all courses completed to date and courses in progress. RN licensure will be required prior to enrollment in any Villanova RN to BSN courses.

Graduates From Foreign Universities

Applicants who are graduates of foreign universities with a foreign degree must also submit an official transcript or proof of degree from all degree-granting institutions as well as a report of TOEFL scores. TOEFL exam is required for all applicants who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents unless their undergraduate degree is from a U.S. institution or equivalent. Minimum score on internet-based test: 85; Minimum score on paper-based test: 550. Villanova may also accept test scores from Institute for Language and International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum test score of 7. Villanova requires that all foreign university transcripts undergo a course-by-course evaluation for all non-degree bearing and degree-bearing transcripts from one of the following agencies: CGFNS (Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools), WES (World Education Services) or Josef Silny & Associates. Applicants are responsible for all fees for such evaluations and must make arrangements with the credential evaluation company to send and receive their documents. The credentials evaluation must be sent to Bisk Education by the credentials agency or submitted by the student in a sealed envelope. All foreign transcripts must be transcribed into English by the Credentials Evaluation Service. International background checks will be reviewed prior to the student completing their second session (completion of 4th course).

  • A GPA of 2.50 or above in all completed college courses.
