Advantages and Benefits of ITIL Certification

The amount of data a business is required to manage continues to grow exponentially, creating unprecedented levels of management challenges for IT professionals. IT Infrastructure Library® (ITIL®) management practices address these challenges head on. Through combining the best practices of IT service management strategy with a deep understanding of business requirements, ITIL management allows data to be collected, analyzed, and distributed following reliable methodology.

The overall result maximizes product effectiveness and reduces response time. The power of the process is generated through high impact results that increases customer satisfaction and decreases resource expenditures. As more companies realize the effectiveness of ITIL management, the need for ITIL professionals is growing in many industries including healthcare and higher education.

Levels of ITIL® Certification

Professionals interested in advancing their knowledge of the ITIL framework should consider the four levels of ITIL certifications currently available:

  • The Foundation Level certification is the first level of ITIL qualification which builds standard terminology and focuses methodology on the general knowledge required for ITIL Services Support and Service Delivery. Candidates should expect to gain a basic understanding of what ITIL is and how it is implemented in the workplace.

  • The Intermediate Level of qualification is the next level of ITIL certification. This level contains a number of educational modules that candidates are able to choose from, depending on their individual requirements. The intermediate modules are categorized into two main sections; Service Lifecycle, which involves a high level management focus across several ITIL processes, and Service Capability, which gives the candidate specialized, process-level knowledge in one or more ITIL processes. To complete the Intermediate Level of qualification, candidates must pass one additional module, the ITIL Managing Across the Lifecycle qualification, which is aimed at those who are considering the Expert Level certification.

  • The ITIL Expert Level of qualification provides candidates with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand the entire ITIL scheme in great detail. Also delivered in a modular format, candidates are allowed to choose from a variety of ITIL processes based on their individual requirements. To achieve Expert Level certification, candidates must meet key requirements, including achieving a complete, balanced knowledgebase across the full ITIL service lifecycle.

  • For ITIL professionals directly involved in the planning, management and operation of IT service management functions, there is the Master Level certification which broadens and strengthens the practical application of ITIL knowledge in a variety of industry settings. The Master Qualification Certificate confirms that an ITIL professional is able to demonstrate an advanced knowledge of ITIL application in the workplace in order to achieve a desired outcome.

ITIL certification can enhance the competitive edge of IT managers, directors, business analysts, and consultants. The ITIL certification shows prospective and current employers a strong level of commitment to personal success and demonstrates the drive to stay ahead of the competition in the IT field. By completing certification in an ITIL discipline, professionals gain a systemic and professionally valued approach to best practice methodology. The ITIL-certified professional can speak the same language as other ITIL professionals worldwide and will be able to network with a more elite group of professionals across a variety of IT disciplines.

Managers with ITIL knowledge and education can empower individual companies by accurately measuring IT service performance and effectively streamlining data management in ways that improve overall efficiency, response time, and communication within the company and with customers. As the data coming through IT channels continues to increase, so does the demand for highly-skilled IT professionals. ITIL certification provides an opportunity to keep ahead of that competition.
