In response to the current environment of security threats and potential breaches to information systems, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) issued Directive 8570.1, which mandates anyone with privileged access to a DoD system – including full- and part-time service members, defense contractors, and civilian and foreign employees – obtain a commercial information security credential. DoD 8570.1 Certification Deadline

Dod 8570.1 was issued in 2004, with the mandate that all identified personnel be certified within five years of its publication date of December, 2005. That means that by December 31, 2010, 100% of information security personnel and contractors must be certified.
