About the Course

This course serves as an introduction to the value and structure of the key concepts in enterprise business intelligence and the related field of business analytics. You will learn about Business Intelligence/Business Analytics Competency Centers (BICC or BACC) and study the core skills of data management, warehousing, business intelligence requirements, business intelligence program management and data quality management, while learning to make more effective and efficient business analytics decisions.

8 Week Course
Week 1
Introduction to Business Intelligence
  • State what business intelligence is and what it is not
  • Apply BI to real-world marketplace examples
  • Describe the history and evolution of BI, from ledgers to databases to web-based reporting and beyond
  • Identify business intelligence industry trends, including its usage, its adoption, its market growth and the impact of technological developments on BI
  • Understand how business analytics applies BI results to the enterprise
Week 2
Organizing for BI
  • Distinguish between a business intelligence program and a business intelligence project
  • Explain Business Analytics Competency Center, Center of Excellence, and BI Competency Center and name critical success factors for effective use of these concepts
  • State the positives and negatives of enterprise and departmental BI solutions
  • Describe the definition of data governance, along with its components, impact and importance
  • Identify keys to planning for change, overcoming challenges and legacy sunsetting
Week 3
BI Development Phases, Methods, & Approaches
  • Identify key deliverables of the planning, design and deployment phases
  • Describe the different approaches to developing a BI solution and explain the advantages and disadvantages of each approach
  • Understand best practices for BI implementation from a management, planning and development lifecycle perspective
Week 4
Data Warehousing
  • Differentiate the data warehousing theories from Inmon to Kimball and describe the characteristics of each
  • Explain data modeling fundamentals in a data warehouse
  • Define the term metadata and identify the different types and benefits of metadata
  • Define Big Data and Big Data Analytics
  • Discuss Big Data analytics’ impacts on data warehousing and BI
  • Introduce Cloud-based BI and DW
Week 5
Data Quality and Architecture
  • Define the concept of data quality
  • Explain how the quality of the data affects the quality of the BI solutions
  • State various ways to improve the quality of different types of data
  • Define Master Data Management
Week 6
BI Requirements Gathering
  • Name the different ways requirements are captured
  • Explain the differences between top-down requirements gathering and bottom-up requirements gathering
  • Describe how to gather requirements using agile-based methods
  • Outline why BI works well with agile-based approaches to requirements management
Week 7
Readiness for BI and Maturity Models
  • Explain different readiness assessment methods
  • List the nine levels of technology readiness
  • Name the key facets of data readiness
  • Describe maturity models, including Gartner’s BI Maturity Model
  • Explain what the terms Business Analytics Competency Center (BACC) and BI Center of Excellence (CoE) mean and how they apply to enterprise BI

Technology and Capability Review
  • Identify modern BI capability sets
  • Identify questions that should be asked when trying to choose between various types of BI implementations.
