DoD 8570.1

In response to the current environment of security threats and potential breaches to information systems, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) issued Directive 8570.1, which mandates anyone with privileged access to a DoD system – including full- and part-time service members, defense contractors, and civilian and foreign employees – obtain a commercial information security credential. Information security certification is not only a smart way to boost one’s career; it’s a must-have credential for federal government contractors with access to a DoD information system.

DoD 8570.1 Certification Deadline

Dod 8570.1 was issued in 2004, with the mandate that all identified personnel be certified within five years of its publication date of December, 2005. That means that by December 31, 2010, 100% of information security personnel and contractors must be certified.

Job Descriptions Affected by DoD 8570.1

All workers with privileged access to a DoD information system are required to obtain security certification. This includes information assurance technicians and management, computer network defense (CND) analysts, CND infrastructure support personnel, CND incident responders, CND auditors, and CN-SP managers. The directive also includes information assurance system architecture and engineering professionals. In short, all help desk personnel, networking professionals and computer support specialists with access to an information system are affected.
